Peter Babin, Jr. Scholarship Award Rules and Instructions

The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 406 has established a scholarship program to be awarded to one child of Local 406 members annually. The college scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000 and will continue for four years if grades are maintained. The following rules will apply:

ELIGIBILITY

  1. All sons and daughters of Local 406 members may apply, provided the parent has been a 406 member in good standing for 5 years.
  2. Applicants must be high school students who have, or will be, graduated during the year they apply.
  3.  Applicants must have a cumulative “B” average at the time of their application.
  4. Applicants must meet the academic requirements of an accredited college of their choice.
  5. Applications must be received by September 15, 2024 for 2024-2025 school year.

AWARDING SCHOLARSHIPS

  1. The Local 406 Business Office will verify parental membership requirements.
  2. A committee composed of the Executive Officers will judge all applications and will select the winner.
  3. The election will be made on the basis of academic achievements, student activity and financial need.

PAYMENT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

  1. The scholarship is to be used at a college or university of your choice.
  2. Payment will be made directly to the college or university at which the student registers. If tuition is less than award, the difference will be given to recipient of award for books, supplies, living expenses, etc.
  3. The $1,000 scholarship will continue for 4 years provided a “B” average is maintained.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Application form is a part of the Engineers News, on the I.U.O.E. Local 406 website and copies will also be available from the office of the Business Manager. When completed, application shall be sent to aguillot@iuoelocal406.org or mailed to 7651 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70814.
  2. A copy of the high school transcript should be sent with the application.
  3. A recent photograph of the applicant shall accompany the application.

2024 AFL-CIO Scholarship Opportunities

In March of 2024 the Louisiana AFL-CIO will be awarding three $1000 scholarships!

All contestants must have their application materials postmarked by January 12, 2024, and mailed directly to Mrs. Sharon Reine at the Louisiana AFL-CIO Scholarships, P.O. Box 3477, Baton Rouge, LA 70821. Please note: The postmark deadline cannot be extended

To be eligible to enter this essay contest, all contestants must be high school seniors residing in the State of Louisiana whose parent/stepparent is a member of an affiliated local union in good standing with the Louisiana AFL-CIO.

An essay is required for consideration in this competition. The topic of the essay is “How Have Unions Affected Public Policy and Local and National Governments” and the rules are as follows:

  1. Contestants are expected to use encyclopedias, textbooks, the Internet, biographies, bulletins, newspaper articles, the AIL Labor Letter, reports of private organizations or governmental agencies, personal interviews with union personnel (other than their parents), and other research materials deemed appropriate as sources of information. Research materials should be properly cited and documented.
  2. The contestant’s application must include the following:
    1. A one-page cover sheet showing the student’s name, address, phone number, name of school, name of the parent who is a Union member, and the complete name, local union number, and telephone number of the local union of which the parent is a member.
    2. All applicants must submit an essay of 1,500 to 2,000 words on the topic. DO NOT put your name on the essay!
    3. A current copy of the applicant’s high school transcript.

The scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of the essay’s worthiness, but the required information will be considered as well. Essays will be judged on the basis of the ideas presented and developed, the quality and pertinence of the reference information employed, and the overall clarity and originality of the essay. LOUISIANA STATE BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION TRADES COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

The Louisiana State Building and Construction Trades Council will offer a ·minimum of two (2) $2,000.00 college or university scholarships a year in the name of Joseph M. Bertucci.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE RULES:

  1. Children of members of a local union affiliated with the Louisiana State Building Trades who are attending High School and are about to complete their senior year are eligible to compete for scholarships.
  2. Applicants must be children of members of a local union affiliated with the Louisiana State Building Trades who have two years or more of CONTINUOUS MEMBERSHIP in a local union affiliated.and Louisiana State Building Trades and who are IN GOOD STANDING at the time of the child or grandchild’s application. (A member in good standings is an Active members child or any retiree who is receiving a pension from a Local Union.)
  3. Scholarship awards are competitive and will be based on:
    • Academic standing of the student during his four (4) years in high school.
    • College Entrance Examination Board Score or American College Testing Program Score.
    • Essay – Typed (1,000) Maximum of one thousand words double spaced.
    • Extracurricular activities and leadership.
    • Character reference and other pertinent factors.
  4. Receipt of a Joseph M. Bertucci Scholarship does not preclude acceptance of other Scholarship awards.
  5. A scholarship winner may attend any accredited college or university of his choice in the United States, But must be enrolled in. a full-time program in any course of his/her choosing.
  6. Scholarships will be awarded for one (1) academic year only.
  7. The awards will be made payable to the selected applicants and will apply to educational expenses first.
  8. Applicants shall submit a complete application within specified deadlines to receive consideration for Scholarships and must include a transcript of high school grades covering seven (7) full semesters, six (6) semesters if applicant is in the top one-third of his class.
  9. The applicant must submit a one-page handwritten statement covering his aims and ambitions.
  10. QUESTION: Please choose one of the following global warming questions to write your 1,000-word essay.
    • How do we know global warming is real?
    • How has global warming affected the world so far?
    • What impacts will global warming have in the future?
    • How do we stop global warming?
  11. In judging scholarship applications, The Awards Committee (appointed by the President of the Louisiana State Building and Construction Trades Council) shall select a first and second alternate. Such alternate ma:ybe eligible in order of their selection for scholarships if one more of the applicants
    initially selected for any reason are unable to accept a scholarship award.
